If you had to choose only one shoe from your collection, what would it be?
It would have to be the Dune 997. For me, this was the spark that got me back into sneaker collecting and sneaker culture. I had a passion for sneakers in highschool, but when I attended university out of town, I lost touch with that hobby while I picked up breakdancing and photography. Upon seeing this pair online one day, I remember never quite seeing a New Balance like it and I searched through all the photos I could find of it. The materials, the different shades of tan and that hit of blue just killed it for me. I searched for tidbits of information on it and found out I had missed the overseas release quite some time ago and it took me a year to track them down in my size. Luckily popped up on a random Ebay search for an extremely reasonable price.
Favourite New Balance models?
Of course the (original silhouette) 997 with that narrow shape and pointy toe box. The 998 for its consistent slim shape and suede uppers and 990/1400 in that order.
If you could collaborate on one model, which would it be?
Hands down the New Balance 997. That silhouette is perfect to me. The tapered shape and sharp toebox, it originally being made in 1991 (my year of birth), premium materials and made in the US, can't go wrong. I would probably use either goretex or some water-proof suede like the cncpts seal release because I'm obsessed with water-resistant fabrics.
What's one sneaker that has continued to elude you?
Without question, the Beauty and Youth/United Arrows collab on the 997.5. Such a simple, but well executed modification on the base grey 997.5 model before they re released the actual 997 model. The 997.5 was a weird frankenstein 997 upper (bulky) with a 998 sole (just like my dunes). Soon after Kanye was seen rocking this pair, they really disappeared. Also the alife ARC teal 1300's...
Any memorable sneakers from your childhood?
Other than the ones that light up when you walked, it would have to be a white pair of Adidas Original Adiracer lows with the Good Year rubber on the outsole. I remembering being big into these running silhouettes in highschool along with puma's before getting into bboying later on. My friends were wearing mostly nike basketball shoes at the time, but other than air force 1 mid's, I was more interested in low cut silhouettes. For whatever reason, I thought that having a legitimate tire rubber brand manufacturing the outsole was the coolest thing and would make me run faster on the track when I would race my friends in a sprint. I do remember thinking they helped me win a few races and looking back, explains my interest in collecting runners.
What is your biggest sneaker pet peeve?
For the people that know me, they are well aware of what I'm about to write haha. Without question, the thing that bothers me the most is when people aren't on brand, but more specifically, people who rock those Adidas track pants with the 3 strpies down the side into some Nike kicks; usually roshe runs. I die everytime.
Any shoes on the horizon you're looking forward to?
The New Balance 1300 JP2, which is sadly looking a bit disappointing shape wise compared to the 2010 release, but we'll have to see, I mean, they only release every 5 years.
