Tell me about the one pair of shoes from your collection you could not live without
Air Force 1 Year of the Dragon. This sneaker is just special to me. I went with a sneaker that I remember being excited as hell for. Air forces were what got me into sneakers in the first place. There was such a variety of colours back in the day, but it never felt watered down or played out. Ever since I was in middle school, I remember thinking how cool my Chinese zodiac sign would be as an AF1. When it finally got announced, I was happy with it. That pair is perfect to me. They released 2 other YOTD pairs that same year that were garbage, so I'm glad they got one of them right.
How did you obtain them?
Man, I wish I was better at gauging hype for sneakers. I had no idea if people would camp out for these or what. It was a tier 0 sneaker, so it was going to be extremely limited. At the time, only two stores in Toronto had that account. Maybe the most limited AF1 to ever drop in Toronto. I remember getting there super early with a friend and only 1 other person was in line. An hour passes and no one shows up! I thought damn, I should have slept in some more. A few more hours pass and still no one shows up. Now I'm thinking fuck my life, morning comes and I think 5 people were in line. It was that day I realized no one in Toronto gives a fuck about AF1s. The icing on the cake was when I got up to pay and they told me the price. Two-hundred-fifty fucking dollars plus tax. At one point, air forces were $140-160. I had a heart attack and in my head, I was thinking no matter what happens, I can never ever sell this sneaker. It will be buried with me. I did too much and paid too much to own these.
What were some influences that led you to collect sneakers?
I never got influenced by media growing up or the Schools I went to when I was young. No one really had the money for Jordans or none of that and seeing people rock jordans did nothing for me. I wasn't thinking about asking for sneakers in that price range. AF1s were the freshest sneaker I could get that I could afford. I don't know where these kids get their money these days, or what corner they are sucking dick to afford $500 sneakers, but not having a lot of money, a pair of air forces, two separate laces and you had yourself two different pairs when you flip the laces once the white laces got dirty. Fat Joe of course was the king when it came to AF1s. To this day, I don't know anyone who can fuck with his collection.
Walk us through your ideal collaboration
My ideal collaboration would be on an Air Force 1 of course. It would have a crocodile swoosh and raw denim all around. I would need some leather in there to break up the denim. They have so many colourways for the Air Force 1, I would need to stare at a computer rendering for an hour just to find something different. But that's my dream team of materials.
Are there any sneakers that stick out in your mind from your childhood?
One sneaker that sticks out was the TMAC 5. Dear Lord. My foot was so fat I had to size up to a 13 just to get the strap to close. I didn't give a fuck. That sneaker was insane to me. You couldn't tell me nothin when I had those on. I wish I had a photo of me wearing those. I want to see how stupid I looked in a size 13.
Was there a pair of sneakers you remember growing up that you were not able to afford?
A sneaker I couldn't afford was the Nike shox. I didn't know anyone who could afford them. I remember thinking they made you jump higher. Other kids thought you could dunk. Looking back, it was funny how cool we thought that sneaker was. That sneaker is one of the ugliest pairs ever. But I really miss the days when 200 was the most expensive sneaker and when you are in highschool without a job, you never saw anyone with em.
What's your most recent pickup?
Most recent pickup were a pair of visvims. I need to go to completely different brands, just so I don't have on what every other kid wears. These hypebeasts are killing me. I see a big difference between my generation and this new breed of kids coming up. We buy and wear what we like and they buy and wear what we like.
What’s one grail that continues to elude you?
A sneaker I'm still hunting for are the 112 air max. If anyone out there reading this Im looking for a size 10. I'm know I'm gonna find one with the caption "selling for rape so come correct". "heat trades only in my favor" or my favorite "VVVVVVVVVVNDS.
