Tell us about the one pair of sneakers you couldn't live without?
They're brand new to me, but I'm so happy to have gotten a pair of Jordan 12 Flu games, finally. I've lived just fine without them for the last 19 years, but it means a lot to me to have these now. I absolutely remember first seeing this shoe in 1997. I grew up outside of the city, and we didn't have a lot of money, nobody really did, so things like new Jordan's were rare to see. My friends and I were into skateboarding, but I had a real soft spot for basketball, and rap music, rap culture... I kinda payed attention to shit like Jordan's, and Penny's, Pippens by virtue of knowing some other dudes who were just into playing ball and rap. I remember one dude in particular who was easily the best ball player in our school, also was the only person I had ever seen wear those Jordan 12s when they came out. He had every shoe though, like every Monday I looked forward to seeing what he got over the weekend, partly out of jealousy, and also just out of pure interest. I got to see every sick ball shoe of the 90s in person, played in by the best ball player I ever saw in person as well. It used to burn me up that the rich kid with all the talent also had all the shoes, but in hindsight I'm so grateful for that experience. In a way that dude put me on to shit I never would have seen otherwise. Sometimes I wonder what he's doing now, if he's still shooting ball, still got shoe game. I remember pretty much every shoe of that era in detail because that dude and these Flu game Jordan 12s have been my favourite Jordan's ever made without question. I never thought I would get to have a pair myself.
How did you come across them?
Shout out Livestock and you dawg!
What led you to sneaker collecting?
There's a lot about having nice ball sneakers that appeals to me. I remember basketball from my childhood being the most fun to watch and play, and I think there were a lot of shoes of that era that recall great memories and forgotten styles.
If given the chance to collaborate on one sneaker design, which brand and model would you choose? What would the finished product look like?
Wooo, off the top of my head, I'd love to see a white suede Nike blazer mid retro with a gum sole.
Tell us about the most memorable sneakers from your childhood.
My faves from the younger years were the Eś Sal 23. Skated a few pairs of those. Always in white suede with a gum sole. Very extinct colourway these days.
Were there any sneakers you couldn't afford growing up?
I always wanted actual ball shoes, but we couldn't have them, especially when my folks saw how blasted my skate shoes would get. I remember I got a pair of Dr J converse shoes that were like a Jordan 12 knock off, and for a bit Bi-Way had some Fila ball shoes we would stock up on. Sneakers were like a fantasy thing though.
What is your biggest sneaker pet peeve?
Lol, just when I sleep on something I know I should get, and it sells out
Tell us about your most recent pickup.
Flu Game!! But before that, I got some AF1 high retros. White with the black swoosh. I like that you can take the strap off, and the retro cut is slimmer than normal AF1s. The swoosh is the fat body one too. It's a nice shoe.
What pair of sneakers continues to elude you?
Blackout Air Bakins would be nice to find.
