Tell us about the one pair of sneakers you couldn't live without?
Although these may not be the 'rarest' shoes I own, I am such a sucker for all of my Nike Air Huaraches (specifically my 'Triple White' colourway). If you ask any of my friends, they will tell you I have a serious addiction to 'all white' sneakers, so when Nike dropped the 'Triple White' Air Huarache in 2014, I knew I HAD to have them. Nike first came out with the Air Huarache model in '91 which was also the year I was born, so I have a special place in my heart for them!
How did you come across them?
A couple years ago I became friends with the manager of a sneaker store, who quickly caught on that I had a slight huarache obsession. Whenever they received new colourways he used to call me to come in and look at them! He knew I was waiting for the 'Triple White'/'White Pure Platinum' colourway to drop in Canada, so he called me before they even put them on the shop floor to say he had my size on hold for me :)
What led you to sneaker collecting?
A lot of things. When I was younger one of my favourite TV shows was 'Fresh Prince' - I definitely think my initial love of sneakers and loudly printed bomber jackets originates from that. Other than that, growing up I went to a private school with some kids who had A LOT of money - so every morning before you had to change into your uniform, the hallway acted as a runway for kids to stunt their latest and greatest sneakers - I definitely remember looking at some of my friend's sneakers and being mad jealous that I couldn't afford them. Lastly, I think music was an obvious influence - I have always been into hip-hop and sneaker culture has always been a central component in hip-hop.
If given the chance to collaborate on one sneaker design, which brand and model would you choose? What would the finished product look like?
Although I have a serious love for huaraches, I also love Nike's Air Max '95 model (such a classic) - Although this is hella girly, I love me some pink sneakers - So I would probably do a suede body that faded from light pink to dark pink, white sole and mid-sole, white mesh, white swoosh, pink lace loops, and white laces (BRB while I check to see if NikeID has a pink colourway available)!
Tell us about the most memorable sneakers from your childhood.
Probably a combination of Nike Shox - I played basketball in grade school and I actually convinced myself that my Shox made me jump higher (I refused to play without them), after that I had an obsession with my white 'Air Force 1's' (which I still love), and then in high school I strictly wore Adidas 'Superstars'.
Were there any sneakers you couldn't afford growing up?
My parents fully cut me off when I was 18 - So before my 18th birthday I was very fortunate that if I 'needed' a new pair of shoes, my parents would most likely buy them for me - but, if I just 'wanted' a new pair of kicks, then you best believe I was saving my $14/week allowance until I had enough money to drop on them. This wasn't really due to not being able to afford them, but when I was in grade school my friend had a pair of baby pink 'Phat Farm' sneakers and I wanted them so badly. My dad absolutely refused to buy them for me and although I was devastated at the time, I thank him now for saving me from the potential embarrassment of having old pictures of me kicking around in those!
What is your biggest sneaker pet peeve?
I'm a size 8 in women's - which roughly evens out to a 6.5 men's (WHICH ARE NOT ALWAYS EASY TO FIND!!) - My biggest sneaker pet peeve is definitely that men get WAYYY sicker sneakers than women. Seriously, have you ever walked into a sneaker store and looked at the 'women's' section? They're seriously lacking. Places like KITH definitely have a better women's selection than your average Footlocker, but there is definitely still room for improvement in the women's sneaker market.
Tell us about your most recent pickup.
I just picked up the winterized Nike Air Max 95's AKA the sneakerboot...because IT'S HELLA COLD IN TORONTO, and if anyone needs a 'winterized' sneaker - it's us Canadians!
What pair of sneakers continues to elude you?
Any of the Hender Scheme's from their 'Hommage' collection. Like I said I love pink, but also can't swallow their 4 figure price tags - but maybe one day :)
