If you had to choose only one shoe from your collection, which would it be and why?
If I had to pick one shoe, it would be the Nike Air More Uptempo, in the Olympic colourway. It was a shoe that I remember from when I was growing up in the 90's. To me, it really embodies everything about the 90's basketball shoe. The full length Air Max sole, the chunky upper, the bold design that spells "AIR", etc... My high school basketball coach had an original pair in black/white. The first time he wore them to practice, I told myself I had to have them.
How’d you obtain it?
The Olympic colourway came out in 2012 to coincide with the Summer Olympics. It was part of a whole Olympic pack. Once I heard it was releasing, I immediately called my friend at Foot Locker and made him promise to put a pair aside for me. I remember showing up late for the line up, but I knew my friend had my back so I wasn't worried.
When and what made you get into sneaker collecting, sneaker culture?
I first got into sneakers when I was playing basketball in high school. Of course, you wanted to have the coolest and best ball shoes. I spent a lot of time researching shoes to find the best looking ones that had the best performance. Naturally, that grew into looking for cool and exclusive sneakers. I had to have the best shoes on and off the court.
How does your occupation/lifestyle influence what sneakers you choose to wear?
Owning a shop, I feel as if how I dress is representative of my business. So, the clothes and shoes I wear have to reflect the style and look that we have at Working Title. For the most part, that means simple and clean sneakers. On the other side of being a business owner, I work almost everyday and I'm on my feet a lot so I need my sneakers to be really comfortable. We carry Eytys at the shop so of course those are heaviest in my rotation. The cork insole takes some working in but they mould really nicely to your foot. But otherwise AF1's (with the lunar sole, for comfort), Huarache's, and Stan Smiths are in the rotation. When I want to wear something a little louder, my go to's are my Air Max 97's and my Air More Uptempo's.
If you could collaborate with any brand, which and what model would you choose?
Nike is my favourite footwear brand, hands down. If I had to pick one model, it would be the Nike Air Footscape Motion. It's a model that I think you can do a lot with in terms of colours and materials. As well, it's model that I want to be more available on the market.
What’s one sneaker (grail) that you’ve failed to track down so far and are still looking for?
An aberration from my strictly Nike lineup, the grail that I haven't been able to track down is the New Balance x Engineered Garments 993. I love the mismatch suede and mesh combo. As well, I'm a huge Engineered Garments fan. The 993 is so key in the EG look, and I'm kicking myself for not getting that shoe.
Any memorable sneakers from your childhood?
One of the shoes imprinted in my memory growing up was the Nike Shox BB4. The Shox technology was new, and there were all of those Vince Carter commercials on TV. I think I was 10 when it came out, and everyone had it. Unfortunately, my feet were too small for the men's sizes. Growing up as a Raptors fan, I remember that white/purple colourway that Carter wore.
Any sneakers you remember not being able to afford when you were younger?
I really wanted the Lebron IV's in high school to wear as a ball shoe. It was just way too expensive for me and I couldn't ask my dad to spend that much. I probably didn't need it, but it looked so cool and it had Foamposite.
Any shoes you regret picking up?
The one regret that stands out was the Nike x A.P.C. Dunk High that came out in 2012. I got the white leather and cream suede one. It was still kicking around at Livestock long after the release so I just got them. I don't like wearing Dunks anymore so I'm pretty sure they've never been out of the box. They're great shoes, I just haven't really gotten around to wearing them.
What's your most recent pickup?
I just got a pair of the Lunar Force 1's with the Hyperfuse upper as a gift. They've been out for awhile and hit outlets so my girlfriend got a pair for me off eBay. I love classic AF1's but the Hyperfuse upper makes it lighter and it looks cooler, not to mention the Lunar sole is way more comfortable.
