Tell me about the one pair of shoes from your collection you could not live without
The Air Jordan Space Jam 11 has to be the one shoe that I consider a grail. A shoe that I had to have and I will always hold on to. The first time I saw the Space Jam 11 in the movie, I had to have them. I was young when the movie came out. That scene where Jordan suits up for the Tune Squad and the camera zooms in on his first step onto the court, the Jordan 11, in all black with the blue jumpman and icey sole. I'll never forget the moment I saw the shoe in that scene.
How did you obtain them?
When I was old enough to have a job, I saved up money and had to pay market price because when they released, I couldn't grab them being so young. I found someone on redflagdeals selling them locally for a decent price, and I jumped at the chance right away.
What were some influences that led you to collect sneakers?
Growing up I was really influenced by my older cousin. He taught me everything I know. He was like an older brother to me growing up. He showed me the game of basketball and he would obsess over Michael Jordan. He passed away this year, but I will never forget the impact he had on me. He taught me everything I know in regards to basketball and sneakers.
Walk us through your ideal collaboration
The only collaboration that I would really like to see has already happened. Recently I haven't really been wearing basketball sneakers. When I do, it's the ones that I find I can wear more casually. The Nike SB line and a Jordan collab was what I was looking forward to. The Lance Mountain 1 pairs specifically, I thought was a cool concept. The way the paint comes off the more you skate the shoes and the way each pair can be unique to the person wearing it is a really dope concept. Everything about the history of the mismatching shoes and the whole paint concept is really cool to me.
Are there any sneakers that stick out in your mind from your childhood?
The one shoe that sticks out in my mind from my childhood, other than the Space Jam 11 has to be the Air More Uptempo. The black pair with the giant "AIR" along the sides is what I'll always remember. That was my very first pair of Nikes. I chose them because I couldn't get Jordans, so with Pippen wearing them, it was a no brainer.
Was there a pair of sneakers you remember growing up that you were not able to afford?
When Vince Carter had his signature line, it was a little more expensive than I could afford. I remember not being able to cop a pair, so instead I went with a shoe that had shox as well. If I couldn't get the Vince Carter Shox, might as well get something similar. I'll always remember settling when I couldn't afford the ones I wanted.
What's your most recent pickup?
My most recent pick up were some Nike Prestos. The black and white pair that dropped recently. It's a simple shoe and it's pretty comfortable that I can wear often, so I grabbed them.
What’s one grail that continues to elude you?
The one shoe that I always tell myself I need, but can never pull the trigger, is the '99 white cement 4. Whenever I find a pair, it is either cracking or gonna crack when I wear them. With the rumor of a retro next year, I am excited that I might finally cross that off my list.
